About Susan B. Anthony, Sacagawea and Presidential Dollar Errors

Susan B. Anthony Dollars

Key Details and Values

Value: Most common circulation strikes are worth only their face value ($1) in poor condition, but they can be worth $2-$5 dollars in high Mint State.

1979P “Wide Rim” (Near Date): The most common of the errors. The date 1979 is very close to the rim and this coin is valued at $10-$15 for circulated, and up to thousands in higher grades.

1979S Type 2 Proof: A “Clear S” mint mark. Valued highly, often $30+.

1981S Type 2 Proof: “Clear S”. Highly collectible and rare.

Missing Clad Layer Error: A rare error making the coin look golden/copper can sell for more than $600.

2000-P Sacagawea Dollars Speared/Wounded Eagle

The 2000-P Sacagawea Wounded or Speared Eagle dollar is a rare/valuable mint error featuring a raised die line across the eagle's abdomen, resembling a spear. This anomaly is only found on the Philadelphia business struck coins. These coins can be worth hundreds of dollars in mint state condition.

Where to find them: These coins are found in circulation, but most commonly in original bank-wrapped rolls or mint wrapped rolls. Particularly those with a 2000-P mint wrapper.

2007-P George Washington Presidential Dollar "Elongated Ray"

First thing that you should do is read the article entitled "The Elongated Third Ray Dollar" by Tom Koolick on the PCGS website.

The 2007-P George Washington Presidential Dollar "Elongated Ray" is a rare die variety where the third ray on the Statue of Liberty's tiara (reverse) extends to touch her upraised arm, rather than stopping short. Recognized by PCGS and other services, this variety is likely from a hand-engraved or damaged die.

Key Details of the Elongated Ray Variety

  • Variety Name: 2007-P Washington Dollar Elongated Ray (sometimes listed as FS-902 on GreatCollections or VP-001 on NGC).
  • Location: The third ray up on the Statue of Liberty's tiara, extending to meet her torch arm.
  • Significance: It is a, relatively, scarce, visible, and sought-after variety from the first year of the Presidential Dollar series.
  • Variety Recognition: PCGS lists this as a 2007-P $1 George Washington Elongated Ray on PCGS website.

Identifying the Elongated Ray

  • Normal Ray: A clear space exists between the top of the third ray and the arm.
  • Elongated Ray: The ray is visibly longer, extending upward to meet or appear to touch the outstretched arm.
